The Substation

This is Singapore’s 1st contemporary arts centre, situated within the city’s civic district. The Substation presents a multi-faceted program ranging from dances and rock band music to poetry and film festivals. Hence, for an out-of the box approach to various art forms, why not drop by the Substation for an eye-opening experience.

In the past, the present site was a power station, which ceased operations in the late 1970s. The venue's late founder Kuo Pao Kun, a dramatist and performing artist himself, proposed for this disused venue to be converted into an arts centre. Today, the Substation encourages experimentation across all art forms. Especially dedicated to developing the young and emerging, these budding artists are taught to experiment and most important of all, to perservere even through failure.

You will find several venues such as the theatre, dance studios, classrooms as well as a gallery. The gallery is where multi-disciplinary events are held. The theatre is used for film and video screenings presentations by artists. The studios and classrooms are where artistic directors conduct lessons on anything from yoga and art writing to photography and batik painting.
