Chijmes

This unique, one of a kind compound with its Gothic architecture, was once the Convent for the Holy Infant Jesus, a icon for education of generations of Singaporean girls since 1852. In 1991, major restoration works commenced. Five and a half years and S$100 million later, Chijmes reopened in mid 1996. It was transformed into a perfect venue for alfresco dining amidst an unmatched atmosphere and ambience. F&B outlets now populate the compound, with long covered walkways, carefully planned open spaces and beautiful courtyards. In fact, the courtyards have been used as backdrops for musicals and theatre performances.

Choose from an extensive array of international cuisine at Chijmes. There Japanese, Italian, French, Spanish, Chinese, American restaurants amongst many more. Most cafes have an alfresco area and an indoor air-conditioned space. With so many choices, you can be sure to find something suitable.

While visiting Chijmes, take time to appreciate these structures and buildings:

Chijmes Hall - The 19th century stained-glass windows have been magnificently restored, including the facade and plasterwork. This hall was once the Convent's chapel. Today, this is a multi-function venue with fantastic ambience is used for anything from wedding ceremonies to music recitals.

Caldwell House - This was once the sanctuary of the nuns that ran the Convent 150 years ago. After extensive restoration ended on this particular building in June 1997, it is now an art gallery, mainly used as an exhibition space.

Fountain Court - Just behind Chijmes Hall is a sunken courtyard of cobblestone, fountains and huge shady trees. Today, there are two levels of F&B outlets here that make full use of the cooling effect of this ingenious concept.

The Lawn - Located right in the centre of the compound, this area is great for a late afternoon or evening stroll, where the sounds of the city will be buffered by the surrounding buildings.
